girls at great scott, lfl

NOVEMBER 8, 2009 | 2:53pm — At Espresson on BU campus trying to put my inexplicable love for GIRLs into words for the Phoenix… Come halp me! (@radghost)

So we go, Stephen, Kyle and I and later AK. We arrive, sit at a long bench table and ask Addison perfunctory questions – how are you? (tired, but good), how’s the piece going? (bad), when’s yr deadline (tonight).

Time passes and Stephen turns in a four sentence love note to Chris Owens of Girls. Kyle sits with a blank half sheet of paper in front of him and his pen at the ready. He glances downward often but remains distracted by Stephen and Addison as they decide which direction to take the piece. Options include a straightforward review (Addison), melodrama (Addison), irrelevant (me), love note (Stephen). Many ideas are discarded as they – Kyle, Addison and Stephen – feel as though they might lessen the worth of the show. Chatter continues, but notebooks remain cold without the warmth of letters. We move closer to deadline.

Although no actual writing is taking place several things are agreed upon: the harmonica solo was the tops and so was Owen’s finger picking opening to the song no one can recall. Also, the reverb that flooded our being at the conclusion of Hellhole Ratrace was just about perfect. Girls is discussed in general, someone says, “I listen to the record every day,” while another asks, “Could you image not having their Album in your life at this point?” I remain withdrawn, creating a limited run pro-vegetarian ad campaign which reads, “Don’t be a turkey, don’t eat turkey. Don’t be a veal, don’t eat veal” and so on.

Chatter continues. Kyle has a few words scrawled on his paper. They read, “band name: [Boys Who Love Girls].”

Chatter continues. It is more of the same and focuses around how to write about a show that was too good and without an unusual event. How do you convey the brilliance of a show in words to someone who was not their and could not feel the music, could not hear the refrain from side conversation so common at Great Scott, and could not wake up the next day still reliving the show. Questions are abundant, but no one has any answers. Kyle has a band name, Stephen has a love note, Addison has it all in his head, and I have a pro-veg campaign.

Chatter continues. How to write a review about a great show?

This is how I do it.

Ps. If the second word in Lust For Life started with an “O” the title of this post would have been more fun, like the concert.
