Science and Art are Friends.
Joeseph Priestley was a mad scientist in the most stereotypically recognizable form. He performed innumerable experiments locked away in his laboratory surrounded by beakers and one-of-a-kind tools making crude observations that were documented in the same way a young girl documents her feelings towards boys – chronologically, in great detail and with passion. He is credited with discovering oxygen (and the concept of an ecosystem) after repeatedly suffocating mice and mint plants under glass containers. One fateful day he decided that he should suffocate the mint and the mouse under a single glass and to his surprise they each survived longer than they had in isolation. While Dr. Priestley didn’t explicitly say that the mint plant was turning the carbon-dioxide produced by the mouse into oxygen; he did understand that their coexistence in an environment was critical for survival. Priestley’s discovery is regarded as one of the most important discoveries in human history and it appears to have occurred out of a chaotic series of trial and error w ith little regard for precision.
I personally can not create music. I wonder how great music is actually made, why it is great, why it can be then categorized as “genius.” Is its creation similar to Priestley’s discoveries? Emerging from chaos. Or is it more deliberate? Radiohead’s songs are typically written on piano by Thom Yorke and then the rest of the band adds their own contribution, they reconvene and polish it up. Yorke also picks words for lyrics based on how they sound which explains why their lyrics can mean everything to everyone. Wilco applies a different, but similar method, where Jeff Tweedy plays guitar in a room while the other members listen in a separate room playing along; Tweedy has no idea what they’re playing. All of a sudden you have Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. To the outsider, this sort of music making process seems entirely random, yet the records sound undeniably coherent.
How different was the discovery of oxyen compared to the creation of Hail to the Thief? Are the great discoveries in science really that different from great works of art? Are you less impressed with Leonardo Da Vinci?
