Jasper Scuttleman is the ex-drummer for Mean Creak. He now plays drums for a Modern English “update” band called Germanic Was So Blasé. You can see them play every fifth Tuesday at the Last Drop in Brighton, or in their basement, email Jasper for details.

It’s been 412 days since I was kicked out of the band, not like I’m counting or anything. And to be honest – which I always am and is probably one of the reasons I was kicked out of the band – they haven’t progressed much, regressed even. I mean, really, that much snare? What is this, 1994?

When they kicked me out of the band they told me they wanted to go in a new direction, I don’t buy it though. I’m pretty confident – and my new band mates agree so I’m not the only one – I was ousted because they were overwhelmed, by my talent that is. You can think of it as a situation where the peasants revolt against the king because they’re afraid he’s too good, because too much raw talent and power shoot like lightning out of his hands, through his sticks and explode in dirty emotion when those electrified sticks crash into his, well Zildjian crash cymbals. I’m sweating just thinking about it. Anyway, they must be kicking themsesky (orlves over it now. In fact, I know they’re beating themselves up over kicking me out of the band. Just listen to Light Into Dark, it’s all about finding middle ground and burning hands (an obvious reference to the electricity that flows through my palms and fingers).

Another obvious reference to me on their new album is Strange Man. I mean, “You don’t want/ anything you need” is clearly about the band realizing they’ve made a mistake in ousting the best damn drummer that they’ve ever been lucky enough to witness. It’s kind of like when the Beatles kicked Pete Best out of the band, they beat themselves up over that for the rest of their career.

I don’t hold any grudges though especially since I’m in this great update band, which if you’re not familiar and you should be cause they’re the next big thing, or at least, they will be once we totally break, is a band that updates or improves on seminal bands of our times. We’re called Germanic Was So Blasé and we play the Last Drop in Brighton every fifth Tuesday between 6 and 623pm. Come check us out.

I guess you’re wondering if I’m going to go to the Mean Creak dual CD release show with Drug Rug and the Needy Visions. Probably not, I have band practice or something better to do I’m sure. Unless they comp me a ticket, times are kind of tough with this recession and everything, you know?
