Sans (Nan)Terre
To borrow a phrase from a bygone era, “Every question is a political question.” But who is into politics now that Obama is in the white house? Fortunately nobody is. This means nobody, save a few, has any idea how every one of their actions implicate them in torture and exploitation.
People are too busy losing their jobs and homes to keep tabs on the intricacies of the environmental debate and the failings of free market capitalism. And thankfully things are only going to get worse. Much worse.
Now it is March. There are only three months until Summer and according to the UK’s Metropolitan police’s Public Order Branch this summer is slated to be bad, so bad in-fact they have already given it a name: “The Summer of Rage.” With the governments in Latvia and Iceland toppled, unrest and dissidence is spreading throughout mainland Europe. Anarchist sympathy and class consciousness are even starting to exert themselves in the Far East, in places like Burma and Japan. What does this mean for Americans? It is hard to say. I suppose the best we can hope for is a dramatic increase in unemployment, a proliferation of police brutality, cultural repression and wide-spread information dissemination. It is not so much that unemployment and police brutality are good in and of themselves, they are abhorrent; however as history, both past and present, both near and far have shown, they are acts of desperation, acts that rarely go unvindicated. We should be thankful for despotic excesses, as the crushing heel of the Patriot Act will make terrorists of us all. We have heard the first shots of this coming revolution in Greece and Great Britain, and the first brave US citizens have already begun to stand a stand, to stake their claim- we salute you Take Back NYU Coalition. What it takes are numbers and outrage. America has both, New England has both. In regards to the latter you are free to take your pick. It can be something as easy as actually be aware of what you eat, as important as protecting wild nature or destroying malignant cultural memes for remember “every question is a political question.”
There are networks waiting for you. They even have visual stimulants. They call it RiotPorn. And for your ears? RiotFolk. Ghost Mice is the vanguard of this movement. I remember listening to them in infoshops, eating Vegan meals, never missing anything, knowing i was in the thick of it. Things are getting thicker and I for one is excited to start living again. But before we go, here are some things we may need: know your friends, know the nets, know your news, and know the rules.
