Sans Terre: Razika

People tell me that they like to listen to “everything.” That cannot be true. Literally speaking, it cannot be true. But the response indicates something. Why would people be impelled to say they listen to everything? Are we a generation of musical dilettantes? Is our genre aloofness a brave gesture which flies in the face of rigid formalism or is it merely an indication of our solipsistic playlistaverse? Most likely both.

This weeks sans terre jaunt brings us Razika. A Norwegian singer who’s spirited genre-bending proves the near-impossible; she makes different types of music that all sound good. Her reggae-influenced (a usually disastrous way to described a song) “Venter p deg” moves with a self assurance and vitality lacking in all but the best recording in the rocksteady genre. The personability (and personality) of her music shines on her indie-rock-fist-pumping-hips-gyrating-dance track “Love is all about timing.” I reckon we can even hear the vivacious grandeur of Iggy Pop in her frenzied track “Kommando.” I was hesitant to say it, but to hell with it, her music is cocksure and I for one fucking love it.
