V.Day+18, or, Rusty Belle is Playing Toad

V.Day: I spent the day making paper cut-out valentines in the Black Sheep coffee shop in Amherst with two good friends.  I don’t speak French, but the sentiment of the “holiday” channeled un peu de francais from my pen that day.  While I didn’t find V.Day love, I did find $4 crumpled on the cold pavement on the walk back to the car at the end of the night.

V.Day+1:  We met our friend Emily to listen to her friends’ band play in Amherst Coffee.  The coffee was good, even more so following a bite of the soft ginger molasses cookie I bought.  The band was even better.  Sitting around a small wood table, surrounded by smart looking people and a myriad of instruments and associated implements, the four members of Rusty Belle quietly breathed their music around the room.  When I first walked in, I saw a table full of washboards and shakers and miscellaneous noise makers, with two small boys quietly tapping at them with drum brushes and wooden sticks.  It wasn’t until I was seated and absentmindedly doodling on heart-shaped post-it notes that I really heard the beautiful voice of Kate Lorenz, and the dreamingly beautiful waltz being played by her brother and the two other members of the band.  I wrote them a valentines poem on a heart, and passed it to them on a dollar as I left.  It read: “Tes chansons sont pour les coeurs dans l’amour”.

V.Day-365:  I went out on a fun date with a cool girl, ending the night at Toad in Cambridge making poems on the table with candy hearts.   I haven’t been on a date since then, but I plan on making Rusty Belle my date on March 4th.
