(Pre)Sans Terre: My!Gay!Husband!

I wish to speak a word for serendipity, for absolute spontaneity and randomness as contrasted with consumerism and commercialized negotiation. As a music enthusiast, I enjoy song and likewise artistic presentation, but all too often am I assailed with predigested intentionality which, in its more palatable forms, appears as kitsch and in its most transparent manifestations, gimmick. Thus I have attempted to leave the beaten path for more rugged terrain, where neither sign nor guide can be trusted and one must fend for oneself in terms of taste, genre and enjoyment. As it would happen I prefer to do this “sauntering” both at live shows and on the internet, but as of late I have begun to prefer the latter as its horizon is far wider and its crests and troughs more dramatic (in some regards but certainly not others!). As a guide I have chosen Henry Thoreau, the patron saint of walking, for it was he himself who first traced the contours of the art. Then again, Thoreau did not just walk, he was a bona-fide “Sainte-Terrer”. In the tradition from which the word “saunter” is derived, Thoreau was a man sans terre, without a home or native land, in the sense that he was equally at home everywhere. It is to this model that I move through the dense sonic brush of myspace. I may start anywhere I please, be it a friend, an artist or a band I currently enjoy and move from there circling, circling back and zig-zagging until I reach a neighborhood or gro(o)ve which suits my liking. It is here that I will dwell and offer my findings, dirty boots and all, to you. For this is exactly what the Transcendentalists did as America’s first youth counterculture. In their rebellion they founded a movement, and in their movement they found beauty. I hope to encourage you too to have a look around, to loose sight of your home and its cozy (iTunes) library. So, enough preamble-ulating, for I have already found my first clearing. He is a DJ called My!Gay!Husband! He rules parties in Vancouver, Canada. I started listening to him four years ago and have since always checked in on his sets. I recommend you do to.
