Funny Games//Across the Universe
I watched Julie Taymor’s Across the Universe this weekend. I watched Michael Haneke’s Funny Games too.
Here are three scenes (one from Across the Universe, two from Funny Games) which are representative of how music was used in both. Obviously, in Across the Universe the music was the focal piece, whereas in Funny Games it was only one tool to evoke an emotional reaction.
I would contend that Haneke’s limited use of music is far more effective than the entirety of Across the Universe.
