Muxtape is Dead

Justin Oullete, founder of muxtape, has posted a lengthy article on the development and downfall of muxtape. It seems that the RIAA filed a lengthy complaint through Amazon Web Services in order to end muxtape in the midst of negotiations with the major labels.

Feeling too much of a burden from sorting out the intracies and backwardness of outdated licensing deals Oullette has decided that he will relaunch muxtape as a service for bands.

I guess its on to FavTape and Mixwit until they get shut down. The RIAA is hopelessly outdated and is slowly killing themselves and consumer desire to purchase music. Why buy music from people who seem to hate it so vehemently.

it is amazing how in every industry the marketers will fight and pay for every inch of “reach” that they can get for their product. The RIAA has decided that all “reach” is not equal, and that the only reach that matters is the kind that can be controlled and the kind that will force consumers to buy hard disk records. The “record” industry needs to realize that they are in the “music” industry and that the music they create is worth the most in person. To simplify, give the music away, sell the live show.

It is crazy what different industries go through. Will there ever be a happy medium in the music scene?

One day and probably soon. The whole industry is getting launched to a new way to monetize the medium. Of course touring will continue to be the only reliable way for artists to make money.

Cheers!
