Crystal Castles’ Knights Video

Crystal Castles used to be the most popular band advertised on blog ads (or at least it seemed that way) and now they seem to be the most divisive band going. Their aesthetic and attitude embody the “don’t care” rock ethos and last month’s Spin article on the band did well to embolden the band’s reputation. Of course, the band was recently caught up in an art theft controversy which even garnered them scorn from John Darnielle. He wrote, “Sure, they made one of my favorite albums of the year so far, but – not to put too fine a point on it – Crystal Castles can go to Hell and stay there.”

In the end, the band probably wants the controversy and the finely tuned reputation because it creates attention and hype that blog ads cannot. I welcome it too, because it’s charming to see a band pretend to believe in youthful invincibility and immortality – even if it may be a bit derived.
