Figuring Out Who’s Not In Iron & Wine

At Bonnaroo my job was to make sure only handicapped people were allowed into the handicapped viewing area during Pearl Jam’s set. Simple enough. Unfortunately, most festival goers are not big on the categorical imperative, or their belief in Kant’s teachings are inversely related to their drug consumption. Either way, a stout women with leather colored skin and long thick black hair approached me.

Her: Hey, what’s back there?

Me: Handicapped viewing area.

Her: Oh, can I come through with this? (She shows her credentials, a standard VIP pass)

Me: No.

Her: Did you know I’m in Iron & Wine? Did you see our set earlier?

Me: No. No.

Her: Well I am. Can I go back there?

Me: No.

The next morning while commiserating about the Kanye set I recollected the story to my friend and our neighbor. Our neighbor - who hails from San Diego and came to Bonnaroo by bike - told me I should’ve responded the women in the following manner:

You’re in Iron & Wine? If you’re in Iron & Wine, where’s your beard, you faggot.
