Rocket From the Tombs - The Day the Earth Met…Rocket From the Tombs (2002)
Rocket From the Tombs was the band that split and created Pere Ubu and the Dead Boys. In both cases the latter bands went on to find success reusing tracks originally created when they were Rocket From the Tombs. The difference being that Pere Ubu also created a solid library of more developed and better music, whereas the Dead Boys were happy to feed of Laughner’s Sonic Reducer for the rest of their career.
The disc is rough, but if you’re a fan of Pere Ubu, the Dead Boys, or just curious, it’s a must listen. Buy.
.
Pere Ubu - The Modern Dance (1977)
Ubu’s first full length album was recorded and released after Peter Laugner’s death of acute pancreatis - a terribly uncomfortable disorder to have. According to Krause’s Food, Nutrition, & Diet Therapy pancreatitis is:
an inflammation of the pancreas and is characterized by edema, cellular exudate, and fat necrosis…symptoms can range from continuous or intermittent pain of varying intensity to sever upper abdominal pain, which may radiate to the back. Clinical presentation may also include nausea, vomiting, abdominal distention, and steatorrhea (my favorite of the ‘orrheas;’ it’s when you more or less are shitting undigested fat resulting in a serious oil slick in your toilet — Aaron)
Furthermore…
Medical nutrition therapy to treat acute pancreatitis includes cessation of oral intake - food and drink - and administering of IV fluids to allow the pancreas to rest. - Krause. Food, Nutrition & Diet Therapy, 2004. pp. 761-762.
Although chronic pancreatitis is more often the result of alcohol abuse from all accounts it was responsible for Laughner’s acute variety. The final track of the album, Humor Me, is David Thomas’ ode to Laughner. Buy.
.
Pere Ubu - Dub Housing (1978)
The follow up to The Modern Dance and just as delightfully off base although much less influenced by Laughner’s time in the band. Buy.
.
Neon Boys - That’s All I Know (Right Now) / Love Comes In Spurts (1973)
Green versions of Richard Hell, Tom Verlaine, and Billy Ficca.
.
Television - Marque Moon (1977)
Television formed in ‘73 and didn’t put out a record until ‘77. Four years of practice, developing, and refining tracks; it does a band good if they can survive through years of limited success.
I wrote a few words on Marque Moon before. I’m not the first and I won’t be the last to tell you how so very good it is. Buy.
.
Richard Hell and the Voidoids - Blank Generation (1977)
Before Television recorded Marquee Moon Tom Verlaine forced Richard Hell out of the group. Then he formed the Heartbreakers with Johnny Thunders of the New York Dolls. Then he left the Heartbreakers and formed the Voidoids. Although like the Dead Boys Hell was still recording tracks he wrote years ago he still was editing, altering, and developing his old tracks. And with the Voidoids he finally gave them their proper recorded due. Another point for years of practice. No; two points! because when he joined the Neon Boys he couldn’t even play bass. Buy.
- Portrait of Hell - Aaron Manders
Mission of Burma - Signals, Calls, and Marches (1981)
The Burma documentary on Pitchfork TV forced me into listening to more Burma. Well, it didn’t force me, but it’s almost impossible to listen to over an hour of quick clips of Burma and not want to listen to their entire catalogue. Buy.
.
Islands - Arm’s Way (2008)
Arm’s Way is finally out and it’s everything I hoped it would be. They’re playing the Middle East downstairs Sunday. Buy.
