WTBU To Use Free Audio Format Ogg Vorbis
I hate AAC, m4a, and WMA audio formats so the following news is good. The news is even better because BU’s radio station WTBU is the first station to truly embrace the Ogg Vorbis format. Free Software Foundation who has reported the story has more on Ogg Vorbis. They write:
Unlike MP3, Windows Media, Real Audio or Quicktime, Ogg Vorbis is not restricted by software patents. The threat of these patent lawsuits chills independent development of multimedia software tools. The use of unencumbered formats like Ogg Vorbis is necessary for providing access to publicly funded news and other programming without dependence on the patent-holding corporations and proprietary software vendors.
I don’t know how popular Ogg Vorbis will become, but Open Office has taken off so I see no reason why Ogg Vorbis won’t. To be honest, I need to take some time and better educate myself on Ogg Vorbis - I will do so now.
