I am Confused by LoFi Swedish Pop: Odd Fiddler
I’m not even sure I like the Odd Fiddler, but Chewing Yr Bubblegum (Instead of Laughing At Me) is infectious. Everything about it is simple – the music, the childish lyrics (see: na na na), and the recording quality, well, I guess that’s just hip lo fi, or not so hip low quality.
Either way it is definitely cheeky and some of the lyrics are definitely a bit off. For example, on They Didn’t Even ‘Slightly’ Lose Their Minds there is a line that talks from the perspective of a homeless man. The verse rushes to completion in order to fit in each syllable. It reads, “I can see on your eyes that you are miserable, but look at me here/ I’m sitting with a needle in my arm and soon I will be dead by HIV.” Either the band had no idea how to translate what they really wanted to say into English, or they really are that infantile and unfamiliar with the declining rates of HIV in IV drug users due to needle exchange and other programs.
Chewing Yr Bubblegum (Instead of Laughing at Me) seems like good fun, but They Didn’t Even ‘Slightly’ Lose Their Minds seems rather misguided.
Odd Fiddler is a three piece band out of London by way of Sweden and the songs are from their debut album, I Wrote Yr Name On A Public Toilet. The album will be released by Series Two Records which is in outfit in Nebraska that seems to be gobbling up every Scandinavian pop group to make available for US consumption.
No tour dates are scheduled at time.
